Each painting in this series is an abstraction of an overarching issue — whether political, global, or personal. The word “magna” means “great” in Latin, and for this set of paintings it reflects the greater idea behind each. In another sense, it reflects the way I strive to combine colors and shapes to create a harmonious composition that’s presence compliments our everyday surroundings.
Both actively and innately, I put a positive spin on thoughts as I constantly try to solve problems that arise. I believe that brings to life the best outcomes, so in this series when I put paint to canvas while thinking about these overarching issues I aimed to envision the most positive outcome and conveyed that through shapes, marks, and colors. In these paintings I use brighter, happier, sometimes very saturated colors. I tried to be as free-form and abstract as possible in shapes, textures and marks, adding layers upon layers. The journey or our aim to solve a problem is sometimes a messy business, noted by meandering marks. Circles that represent people or “the people,” more broadly, are another theme throughout the series. It is to draw, but not draw, or paint, but not paint, and in that way this series is a challenge in meditation and getting out of the way of oneself. It’s also a way of embracing the chaos of life and harnessing or channelling good.
